Security system can also be tied to your other systems, so when certain events happen systems in your house will react a certain way.  Leaving a window or door open for longer than 10 minutes will shut off your HVAC system so your not wasting energy; as soon as the window/door is shut the HVAC system will resume its standard function again.  Or when your security system is notifying of an emergency, the inside lights will all turn on and the outside lights flash making it easier for the emergency personnel services to locate your home.
         

While the primary function of a security system is to give notification of emergencies, like fire and intruders, other functions can be added to give your home or business faster warnings about potential problems.  Notifications for water levels/flood conditions, freeze conditions, carbon monoxide, temperature of refrigerators/freezers, and many other situations, can be notified though your system that can call to alert you of a problem.  Having advanced warning of potential problems will give better opportunity to fix the problem before it becomes disastrous.
